Charles Oliver Murry Gibson known as Charlie to all his large family & many friends, was born in Hurlford, Kilmarnock in Scotland on 17th April 1934. He moved with his parents Charles & Sarah, at the age of 3, to Corby Northants during the depression where his Dad found employment in the steelworks. He later became elder brother to Jimmy, George, Janet & the late Alec.
Charlie attended Rockingham Road Primary School & then went to Samuel LLoyds Boys School in Corby with his Uncle Ian, being 2 years younger than him was more like a brother. He left school at the age of 15 to work in the local Co-op store as an grocer's assistant. He worked there for 3 years until he was called up to do his National Service in 1952. He joined the 1st Battalion Northants Regiment he then joined the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment to serve in Korea. After leaving the Army, he was employed as a lagger in Stewart & LLoyds steel works Corby & Rugely power station & then had various other employments.
He married Jean in 1956. They were married for 16 years & they had 3 children together Irene Charles & Dawn. His family grew to include 7 grandchildren, Paul, Emma, Steven, Grant, Donovan, Jordon & the late baby Mark. He has 4 great grandchildren, Ryan, Ellie, Leon & Riley. Sadly he will miss number 5 due to be born in May 2012.
After a period of bachelorhood he met Gerie at a local dance. They married a year later in 1982 & he became step dad to John, Jacky & Martin. They lived in Corby until 1988. Charlie started his own cycle repair business, working from a shed at home. Then Gerie was transferred to Liverpool with her job where they moved to. Charlie continued his cycle repair business in Crosby Liverpool until he retired.
They decided to move to Spain in 2002. where Charlie quickly adopted the local laid back, relaxed life style. In 2004 Charlie & Gerie acquired a new addition to the family by the name of "Foxy lady" a little spanish chuahua who will greatly miss her "Daddy".
During the periods living in Corby, Liverpool & Spain they met many new & close friends. Charlie & Gerie became members of the ex-serviceman's association here in Spain & they enjoyed many good nights with fellow members at the monthly functions before Charlie became too unwell to attend.
His health began to fail in May of last year but he remained upbeat & optimistic throughout many painful weeks in local hospitals & the pursuing months. He was never too tired or ill to see his family & friends. His quick wit never failed him during these visits. Always ready with a smile & a joke.
Gerie & Charlies' family would like to thank you all for coming today to say Goodbye to him.
You are all welcome to join his family at TJ's bar on Camposol after the service for refreshments.
